Background

Mr. Marus developed his early skills in marketing as a broadcast and communications major at Eastern Michigan University where he developed advertising campaigns for local radio stations. After serving in the military, Mr. Marus returned to the marketing field with the Detroit News in 1972. He designed original advertising campaigns as well as creating custom logos and marketing pieces for clients. In late 1972, Mr. Marus turned to the financial planning industry using his skills in sales and new market development. He began to specialize in tangible investment portfolios in 1975 and formed North American Investment Management Corporation in 1976, serving as President. Under his guidance, over $17,000,000 in rare coins, rare stamps and art objects were included in clients' investment portfolios, in addition to traditional equity investments, from 1976 to 1980. Mr. Marus was the leading representative in sales for two major international firms dealing in rare coins and rare stamps.

In 1980, he sold his interest in North American Investment Management and continued in private practice with Burnett Marus Associates, Ltd., as an industry consultant. He specialized in marketing tangible assets as an investment to the financial planning industry.

In 1981, Mr. Marus accepted the position of President of U.S. Numismatic Investment Group, Inc., the nation's largest rare coin investment firm and an affiliate of Heritage Capital Corporation. During his tenure, Mr. Marus changed the corporation name to U.S. Tangible Investment Corporation, adding rare stamps to the product line. Mr. Marus successfully expanded company operations into Canada in 1986 in the provinces of Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Quebec. Mr. Marus lead the design staff for all the corporate marketing materials used in the US and Canadian markets. Mr. Marus was the editor and publisher of the company's nationally-distributed newsletter, as well as the head columnist, for over fifteen years. He also developed specialized educational presentations on all forms of tangible asset investments for delivery via the Internet for financial professionals.

In 1986 Eastern Michigan University awarded Mr. Marus their prestigious Alumni Achievement Award. He was named as the advisor to the first limited partnership in rare U.S. coins in Australia in 1991. In 1996, Mr. Marus was named to the “International Who's Who of Professionals".

He was previously elected to the National Board of Directors of the International Association of Registered Financial Consultants for three consecutive two-year terms (1990-1995) and was re-elected to the Board for two additional terms (2003-2007) serving as National Treasurer from 2005-2007. During his term he initiated the expansion of the association membership to include Taiwan.

He also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Dallas-Fort Worth chapter of the International Association for Financial Planning for seven years (1982-1989) as the public relations chairman and serving as host for the association's television series on financial planning and managing editor of the association magazine.

He has been a frequent and popular guest on numerous radio and television talk shows in the United States and Canada discussing tangible asset investments, marketing and compliance issues as well as conducting many educational seminars on the topics. Among the organizations he has spoken for are: The National Convention of the International Association of Registered Financial Planners; International Association of Financial Planning, the Canadian Association of Financial Planners, the National Association of Estate Planners and Councils and the American Society of CLUs and ChFCs; IAFP Chapters in Long Island, Detroit, Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio, Houston, Quad Cities, Birmingham, New Orleans and Pittsburgh; the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors; the Financial Advisors Forum (2001 to 2007); the British Columbia Chapter and the British Columbia North Chapter of the Canadian Association of Financial Planners; The Iowa Medical Society; Eastern Michigan University; Purdue University and the University of Tulsa.

His articles have been published in Financial Planning, Trusts and Estates, The Stanger Register,  Coin Connoisseur, Ticker Magazine, The Investment Advisor, The Journal of Personal Finance, The New York Sun, Coin World, The Financial Times (Canada) The Financial Times (London), The Detroit News, The Montreal Gazette, The Vancouver Sun and The Calgary Sun among others. Mr. Marus serves on the editorial advisory board of The Journal for Personal Finance and is also a regular contributing columnist.

In 2000, Mr. Marus formed Burnett Marus Associates as a marketing and sales consulting firm. Recent clientele engaging the firms services include a regional securities broker-dealer, an international hedge fund, a national securities analyst; a national pension consulting firm; a major gymnastics facility, several financial planning firms, an international financial planning trade organization and an international personal marketing firm. He formed Investor's Rare Coin and Bullion Service in 2004 as a private "concierge" firm specializing in providing auction agent services to acquire and liquidate rare coins and other tangible assets for selected financial advisors, estate attorneys and high net worth clients.

His book, "U.S. Rare Coin Investments; A Practical Guide for Financial Advisors" was published in Fall 2003. He resides in Dallas, Texas with his wife (and best friend) of 48 years, Shirley.
